Acute and Chronic Prescribing

Acute Prescribing

Acute prescribing is used for sudden, short-term, self-limiting conditions, such as colds, sore throats, earaches, flu-like illnesses, food poisoning, insect bites, bruises, or minor injuries.

Many acute, self-limiting conditions can be managed at home by learning how to take an acute symptom picture and match it to the most appropriate remedy. Homeopaths use the same principles but with greater depth of knowledge and clinical experience.

In an acute case, the homeopath focuses on the current symptom picture:

  • When did this start?

  • What are the most characteristic symptoms? What symptoms stand out the most?

  • What makes the symptoms better or worse (modalities)?

  • What accompanying symptoms are present (concomitants)?

  • What is the person’s current energy, thirst, temperature, and emotional state?

The remedy is selected according to the acute totality of symptoms and is intended to support the body’s response to the immediate illness.

Acute prescribing is often:

  • More focused and shorter in duration

  • Based on the symptoms present at the time

  • Reassessed frequently as the symptoms change

Example: Two people may both have a sore throat, but one may have burning pain better from warm drinks, while the other has stitching pain worse from swallowing. They may receive different remedies because their acute symptom pictures are different.

Chronic Prescribing

Chronic prescribing is used for long-standing, recurring, or deeply rooted conditions, such as eczema, migraines, digestive problems, hormonal imbalances, allergies, anxiety, recurrent infections, fatigue, or other persistent health concerns.

In a chronic case, the homeopath explores the whole person and seeks to understand the underlying pattern of imbalance. This includes:

  • The history and development of the condition

  • Physical symptoms across all body systems

  • Emotional and mental symptoms

  • Sleep, appetite, thirst, temperature preferences, and energy

  • Menstrual and hormonal history where relevant

  • Past illnesses, traumas, and significant life events

  • Family history and recurring patterns

The aim is to identify the constitutional or chronic symptom picture—the unique way the individual’s vital force expresses imbalance over time.

Chronic prescribing is often:

  • More detailed and individualised

  • Focused on long-term patterns rather than a single episode

  • Directed toward deeper and more lasting change

Chronic conditions are more complex and require a detailed understanding of the totality of symptoms, the individual's constitution, and the expression of the vital force. For this reason, chronic prescribing is best undertaken with a qualified homeopath, who may incorporate different methods of prescribing, including constitutional remedies, nosodes, sarcodes, and other individualised approaches, according to the needs of the individual.
