Understanding Potency and Dose
Choosing the right remedy is only one part of homeopathic prescribing. Equally important is selecting the most appropriate potency and dose for each individual.
Homeopaths use many different potencies, but the most common are 6C, 30C, 200C, 1M, 10M, and 50M. LM potencies are also commonly used.
For acute prescribing, 30C is the potency most often used. Many homeopathic pharmacies sell remedy kits containing the most commonly used household remedies, and these are usually supplied in a 30C potency.
A 200C potency is also sometimes used for acute prescribing, particularly when the symptom picture is clear or the condition is more intense. Many homeopathic pharmacies also offer remedy kits containing remedies in a 200C potency.
While 200C may be used in acute prescribing, it is also considered a higher potency and is frequently prescribed by qualified homeopaths for chronic and constitutional treatment. Potencies above 200C are also selected according to the individual's symptom picture and are generally used by qualified homeopaths, as they act more deeply.
30C – The most commonly recommended potency for acute, self-limiting conditions such as coughs, colds, sore throats, earaches, insect bites, minor burns, bruises, and simple injuries. It is a versatile potency that is suitable for many acute situations when the remedy closely matches the individual's symptom picture.
200C – Sometimes used for more intense, rapidly developing acute conditions or when the symptom picture is particularly clear. It is generally recommended for those with more experience in home prescribing or under the guidance of a qualified homeopath.
6C or 12C – Sometimes used for milder or more localised acute complaints and may be repeated more frequently, depending on the individual's response.
A potency describes how a homeopathic remedy has been prepared through the process of potentisation—a series of dilutions and succussion (vigorous shaking). The choice of potency depends on the individual's symptom picture, their vitality, and the nature of their condition. There is no single potency that is suitable for everyone.
How to Use a 30C Potency
A 30C potency is commonly used for acute, self-limiting conditions when the remedy closely matches the individual's symptom picture.
Begin by taking one dose and then observe the response.
If improvement begins, do not repeat the remedy while improvement continues. Allow the remedy time to act.
If the improvement slows or symptoms begin to return, another dose may be taken.
If there is no improvement after two or three doses, it is usually better to review whether the remedy is the best match for the symptom picture rather than continuing to repeat it.
In homeopathy, remedies are repeated only when needed and according to the individual's response, rather than on a fixed schedule. The aim is always to use the minimum dose necessary to gently stimulate the vital force.
This guidance is intended for simple, acute, self-limiting conditions. If symptoms are severe, persist, worsen, or you are concerned about your health, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional or homeopath.
